Mission Statement

The British International School of Ljubljana provides a high quality international education in English, balancing the best of the British tradition with proven modern learning techniques. Our passion is providing a positive, challenging and nurturing environment in which we get to know each of our students as individuals, helping them to become versatile, motivated and caring people.

Gimnazija applications now open for September 2010

We offer two entry points to our gimnazija programme:

- Year 10 (first year of gimnazija, following on from 9. razred at elementary school): 2 year courses leading to Cambridge IGCSE certification in 9 or 10 subjects, then followed by:

- Year 12 (NEW! - first in Slovenia) - 2-year A-Level courses certified by Cambridge International Examinations for entry to universities worldwide (including Ljubljana). Unlike the Slovenian Matura, students choose their 3 or 4 strongest subjects to study in greater depth (typically 7 lessons each per week). This may suit students who have done two years at Gimnazija and would rather specialise in their chosen area and drop their weaker subjects. Courses on offer in September 2010 may include (subject to demand): Biology, Business Studies, English, History, Mathematics, Media Studies, Physics, Psychology, Thinking Skills. Feedback from visitors to our school

  • Your school and your teachers have provided such an excelent environment for growth of her personality that I am just going to burst one day of happiness. Never before has she been so comfortable somewhere outside home. Thanks for doing this! (PP, Ljubljana)
  • We have noticed that [our son has] been enjoying the school and the atmosphere that all of your teachers have been able to create. So we want to take the opportunity to give all of you our respect for your work in the school and with [him]. (BK, Ljubljana)
  • THANK YOU for your nice reception and presentation of your wonderful school. It is nice to see how passionate you all are, that there are still good teachers who do not only teach but also give a big piece of themselves into their teaching. All students were impressed to see the positive atmosphere, the equipment, and how creative and communicative the young learners are. (MB, Maribor University Faculty of Education)
  • We are most pleased, after the open day of BISL. Hope you share our enthusiasm for a new chapter in the history of Slovenia. Well done Sir! Our sincere congratulations ... We so enjoyed the open day ... Thank you. (MC, Cerknica)
  • We really do believe that your school is a fantastic initiative and something which is going to dramatically increase the desirability of Ljubljana as an ex-pat destination. (SC, Zagreb)
  • I just wanted to say thank you to you and your staff for today!! I have to tell you that both [children] were incredibly nervous and very against even coming to the Open Day so consequently the trip to Ljubljana was very tense and neither of them spoke one word to us ... well the trip back was a completely different story! They were both really excited and did not stop talking - a huge success - brilliant job!!!!!! thank you!!! (KA, Prekmurje)
  • [My brother] was absolutely thrilled today after spending a day in your school, and that [Polnočni Klub] TV show really gave us reassurance ... therefore we've decided to go for it. I think it answered a lot of [my mother's] questions about how our Slovenian school system views your school and that they're actually very open to it and will welcome your students into their universities. (LG, Ljubljana)

  • Your school is the best!!
    Keep up the good work
    [MS, Ljubljana]
  • [We] both loved what we saw of Slovenia and admire the work you are doing; it really is very inspiring! (Graham M., UK)
  • [Our son] was very happy with what happened to him on Wednesday and is thrilled with the way you are approaching lessons. As far as his decision is concerned there is no doubt. He wants to go to your school very much. (MT, Ljubljana)
  • We believe that this is the best choice we have made so far with regards to our children and that this legacy will far surpass our initial expectations. If only I had such a chance in my time… This way we are combining the best of the two worlds, British world-class education and Slovenian quality of life that is on a par with the best regions in the world. This combination is second to none! (MS, Ljubljana)
  • Through our meeting with you we got an impression that you are a very determined and caring person who knows the needs and capabilities of young children; more than anyone that I recollect from my own schooling. We are convinced that your personal values will be reflected through the people whom you choose to join your team and ... will strive for continuous improvement. (MS, Ljubljana)
  • First of all, [we] were very pleased, not to say touched, by the words that Sue had about [our son]. He is growing so fast ... and Sue is doing a wonderful job with him. [...] since he's in her class he's started loving reading and singing. He even tries to read out the billboards when we drive around. (CG, Šmartno)
